Two undergraduate students of the Federal University of Technology – Akure in Ondo State, Nigeria, were pronounced dead after they drowned in a pond on the university campus on Saturday, July 1st, 2017.

The accident occurred at a fishpond on the institution’s second campus in Obakekere.

In the early hours of the day, the two students, named Emmanuel Olabiyi and Alex ‘Tunde Olokun, visited the Laboratory of Fishery and Aquaculture for their entrepreneurship training, along with other students.

Reportedly, four of the students decided to ride a canoe on the pond. When they were trying to take selfies, the canoe capsized and they fell into the pond. Two of the students who could swim could escape out of the pond, but Olabiyi and Olokun were unable to get out and sank.
