Two engineering students drown in canal in India after taking selfies

On Sunday, November 1st 2015, two college students, Askshay Joshi (22) and Pratik Bhatt (20), drowned in the Narmada canal near Kothariya village of Wadhvan taluka in Surendranagar, India, while trying to take selfies on their mobile phones with the canal water in the background.

Joshi’s body was fished out from the water on Sunday, while Bhatt’s body was recovered on Monday.

According to police, five students of the engineering college had gone to hang out near the Narmada canal on Sunday evening.

“Joshi and Bhatt were taking selfies and were trying to capture the flowing water behind them. But suddenly, Joshi’s leg slipped and he fell into the canal. Bhatt tried to save him, but he too fell into the water and both drowned,” a police officer said reportedly.
